BQE Water and Randy Agius sign an agreement to combine their knowledge and jointly develop their cyanide management activities

VANCOUVER, BC – TheNewswire – September 16, 2021 – BQE Eau inc. (TSXV: BQE), a leader in the management of mining and metallurgical waste streams, is pleased to announce that it has signed agreements with Randy Agius, a global leader in cyanide destruction knowledge, to transfer all the intellectual property of Randy’s business at BQE Water, and for both parties to jointly develop holistic cyanide management services on a global scale.

Under the agreement, Randy will work exclusively with BQE Water’s technical and business development teams, train and help mentor company staff, and ensure that his legacy of technical excellence in cyanide destruction continues.

About Randy Agius

Randy has over 40 years of experience in the mining industry and was one of the pioneers in the development and commercialization of SO2/ Air cyanide destruction technology while working for INCO between 1972 and 2003. Randy became the global knowledge leader and “go-to specialist” in cyanide destruction and was responsible for testing, design, commissioning and operation of over 65 large-scale cyanide destruction systems. His contribution to the mining industry was recognized by the Mining Magazine’s Environmental Award in 2012.

Strategic importance of the agreement

The O2/ The air cyanide destruction process was developed by INCO during Randy’s tenure and is currently the most common method for removing residual cyanide from gold processing tailings around the world. Since the technology was first applied in the mid-1980s, environmental standards applied to discharges from cyanide destruction plants have been significantly tightened. At the same time, commercially mined gold deposits have become more complex, often challenged by the presence of cyanide-soluble base metals and / or iron sulphide minerals. This not only increased the demand placed on cyanide destruction plants, but also created the need for cyanide recovery and recycling. While Randy has developed valuable know-how to meet new cyanide destruction requirements in a cost-effective manner, BQE Water has become the industry leader in cyanide recovery through its expertise in SART technology. Together, our combined expertise will enable BQE Water to offer comprehensive cyanide management services.

“I have been BQE Water for several years now and have selected them as the best successor for my work due to their reputation and unique expertise in SART and water treatment,” said Randy Agius. “They have a young and knowledgeable group who can carry on my legacy for years to come and who have been very successful in China, representing an untapped market opportunity for cyanide destruction.”

David Kratochvil, President and CEO of BQE Water, added: “I am very excited to bring Randy into the fold of BQE Water. Randy’s know-how is highly complementary to our core business, offering strong long-term growth potential for BQE Water through our ability to offer comprehensive and holistic cyanide and water management that has never been as important to gold miners as it is today. The acquisition of the intellectual property in cyanide destruction provides a good example of how the Company can invest its free cash flow to drive future growth without impacting current cash reserves. ”

About the importance of cyanide management to the gold mining industry

Around the world, regulations are advancing and targeting not only residual cyanide in wastewater and tailings produced by mining and metallurgical operations, but also imposing strict limits on cyanidation and cyanide destruction byproducts such as as ammonia, cyanate, thiocyanate and nitrite. A key aspect of cyanide management is the recovery and recycling of cyanide. The more cyanide that can be reused, the less new cyanide has to be consumed and less cyanide has to be destroyed using additional chemicals that produce by-products that require additional management. However, in most cases cyanide will still remain and will need to be destroyed. The objective is to ensure that all discharges are non-toxic and have no impact on the receiving environment. As such, proper cyanide management is essential to authorize new projects and obtain a social license for gold producers.
